Does anyone know a place I could get a Gorre & Daphetid track plan? One that would have enought information to build it.

KALMBACH ONCE PUBLISHED A BOOK ON HIS LAYOUT. I THINK IT WAS CALLED “MODEL RAILROADING WITH JOHN ALLEN”. I’M ALMOST POSITIVE THAT BOOK IS OUT OF PRINT BUT MAYBE YOU COULD TRY EBAY OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

Don’t know where you live, but if you are ever in my part of the world, stop by and I’ll let you read my copy. It has a 1981 copyright by Linn Westcott, Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 81-80290 and an ISBN 0-89024-559-2. These numbers should make your search a little bit easier. You might be able to contact your local Public Library and they might be able to pull from their archives, or let you know where one is available (to use but not purchase.)

John Allen built 3 versions of the G&D. 101 Trackplans has the plan for the first and smallest in enough detail to build. IIRC trackplans for the other 2 were in Model Railroader. Building the final version in G would be quite a challenge and very impressive.

CHANGING THE PLAN FROM 1:87 TO “G” GAUGE YOU WILL NEED A STEP LADDER.

IF I REMEMBER MR. ALLEN HAD TRACK FROM 2 FEET ABOVE THE FLOOR TO 6 FEET.

Thanks everyone for the great help. I never realized how complacated the track plan was. Seems all the tracks melt into each other.

The plan on page 47 (forgot to mention the page number in the e-mail) would be do-able with an overall dimension of about 24ftx42ft.

If you are talking about building the entire layout as on page 97, then I hope you have a very large back yard, that one would take up a chunk of yard about 160ft x 220ft. Then you would be looking at putting down nearly 20,000 ft of track. It could be done, but the budget would be running in the neighborhood of $150,000~$250,000, before putting in the first building.

Stick with the plan on page 47, or even the original concept plan on page 40. Then take the next 30 years to grow into the full layout.

I think the original plan could be easily converted to LS if you have the avalable real estate
