my 0-6-0 B11,came back after painting, weathering, extra pick-ups and a Tsunami sound unit installed. It took a little while to realize that they programed in the 4 digit address.I did’nt feel the sound was loud enough,so i started playing around with the CVs.Set the overall volume at 255 and the chuff, whistle, bell water fill CVs were all set to thier max,but were still pretty faint.I realize that they had to install a small speaker because of the small tender, but the sound is still much lower than any of my other small engines with the older soundtraxx units.Inthe manual they have a CV(s) to use for edgeport, small, medium etc. speakers.I could’nt get any more sound out of the unit and I somehow lost the 4 digit address…it reverted back to default 3.Now I can’t seem to reprogram the 4 digit address with my Digitrax Chief and my DT400r…any suggestions?..I’m pretty sure it’s me and not the equipment.
It’s starting to get a little confusing once I get beyond the simple start up programing
Sorry I can’t help you, but you’re pretty much stuck anyhow. The 4 digit adress is esential to operate the sound.
Hi, Mike.
It sure can be frustrating. I don’t know anything about either the Chief or the DT400r, but have fooled with a few Tsunamis, so here’s a possibility:
If you can’t change ANY of the CVs, have you checked CVs 15 and 16? These two work together to “lock” the decoder. They have to be set to the same value (0 to 7) for any other CV to be changed. (Only if bit 0 of CV30 is set). This is to protect from accidental changes on club-type layouts, or in multi-decoder installations. I found this out the hard way, about 10 minutes after my first installation, while fooling with the whistle (CV115) and accidently setting CV 15 instead!
Set CV 15 to any value from 0 to 7, then set CV 16 to the same value. That should unlock the decoder.
You might also have to do a reset. Or sometimes just powering-off for a few seconds will do it.
Do you have the manuals? They’re only available online, last I heard, and are pretty big, from the Soundtraxx website at: http://www.soundtraxx.com/
On the other point, volume, you are far from alone. I replaced 3 Soundtraxx decoders (of various types) with Tsunamis, in 3 different engines, leaving the previous speakers in place, and all three have much less volume, especially on the whistles. LOTS of folks have complained.
You might review the Tsunami Steam User’s Guide, starting at about page 35. There’s a good step-by-step process. The basic thing is to start with whatever should be loudest (probably the whistle), then set other things lower. If you set everything high, you’ll exceed the maximum it will put out and nothing will be loud. I’ve had some success with this, but not a great deal.
There’s also a Soundtraxx user’s group at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/soundtraxx/
Let us know if you find a magic fix!
Good info on the lock/unlock CV’s. If that is not the problem then I suspect you are going to need a program booster. I also have the "super chief w/DT-400). I was not able to program my tsunami on the program trk or in ops mode. I purchased the soundtraxx program booster and now it programs fine. The booster will also resolve probs I had programming my QSI loco’s.

Made my day…I got the 4 digit address back, by useing a TTX program booster Most of the sound is decent (except for the whistle) The water fill is just right as is the coupler clank. When I get more time,I’m going to try to improve the brake squeel. I still think it;s a programing problem and not the speaker size (minitronics 11/4" )I have the overall volume at 255 and the individual sound CVs are also set at 255 and though they are somewhat acceptable,I would expect that they would be much louder.Walking around with the engine is ok,but when the train is on the other side of the room it’s very low.
