Got pictures of Norfolk Southerns NEW C-44

I was at the mail line today got it. 2 weeks ago I saw 2 of them being towed towards the NS shops covered in a heavy black tarp. Well I saw one by itself and got the pictures of it. You couldn’t even hear it running. Maybe it was a test run or something.

Nice catch and photos. Although if it’s a new unit, (and if the road number was in the 7500 series) then it is a ES40DC, which is the EPA Teir 2 requirement replacement for the C44. The “C44-9W” as we know it is no longer being produced.

kevnbety you are right about the 7500 series. 8500HPGASTURBINE you are right also.
I looked at your pics and the engine number is 9816 which is a C40-9W and it has just been painted with the new "horsehead’ logo. NS’s newest C40-9W’s are numbered 9912-9978.

Thanks, ICMR. I couldn’t make out the number before, but now that I look closer, it is a 9000 series number which would make it a C40-9W, and she sure is pretty! I would guess that this is one of the ones that they recieved from GE with no “paint”, only primer, and they are just now getting around to painting it. Is that correct?

Yes, some of those were delivered in primer.

nice catch

Just FYI. Did a little looking, and this unit WAS one of the Dash 9s delivered to NS with only primer for paint. Here is a pic of her back in 2000 leading a train when she was still “naked”. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=59243 She looks pretty clean, so she must not be too old in that pic. I guess NS is just now getting around to putting on her “dress”.
