The “nearly as many” are injured surprises me.
I had one injured and a dozen fatalities in pedestrian trespasser contacts.
Motor vehicle scoring was much closer for me but not for some of us on the SP Coast, Western and Sacramento Divisions, I’m thinking.
And then the suicide’s success rate on the Peninsula Commute has been nearly perfect.
But, I was called for the Beet Gon Peddler one early 1960’s morning, but got traded-off to the East Peddler from SLO to Santa Barb.
I would have seen a bus load of farm-workers destroyed at Chualar, near Salinas, had the trade not happened.
Dreams of seeing bodies and parts of them and the bus flying by while stopping from 60 mph…the dreams stopped.
The fireman I was traded with from a RR family quit, couldn’t take the sleeping instant replays…
One injury (the driver, months later in the Imperial Valley got between a bulldozer blade and a wall) and 26 fatalities, a few more in hospital later.
