I predict that BNSF or UP will jump in with a higher offer. Their survival depends on NOT letting this happen.
I think if CP makes a hostile offer for NS then NS might seek inclusion with BNSF or UP. My preference would be BNSF.
Even if this goes forward BNSF or UP will not die. One will end up merging with CP/NS and the other with CN and CSX. CSX is larger than NS and reaches more markets so it is possible BNSF and UP would both prefer CSX anyway.
I suppose it is possible we could end up with 3 systems, none of which go everywhere, but all of which have to much overlap to be allowed to merge with one of the others. For example, CP/NS, UP/CSX, and BNSF/CN.
mr. Bess, The new railroad could keep the same reporting mark (BNSF): Burlington, Norfolk, Santa Fe.
Uh, it’s not only the American STB they’d have to satisfy. It’s also the National Transportation Agency of Canada and a number of related Canadian regulators. This merger will never happen.
