I would say in general, anything from within the last 40 years of whatever date or era your layout is set in that you can find.
S.P.& S. was jointly owned by N.P. and G.N. and was merged into the Burlington Northern with the parent co.s and C.B. & Q. in 1970. I don’t know if N.P. and G.N. passenger equipment would have been seen, as S.P.& S. had it’s own passenger trains. I agree with CBQ_Guy’s statement.

Just did a Keyword search on the Index of Magazines using “SP&S” as the search term. The search engine found 86 articles. Reading some of those articles may help you decide on your selection of locomotives and rolling stock.

You’re correct of course, it is an index of back issues. However, you can get reprints of the Kalmbach publication articles from Customer Service at this site. And, even if you’re not a member, you can get reprints of the other articles at the NMRA’s Kalmbach Memorial Library. If you live in or near a large city, possibly the public library will have back issues of the more popular railroad magazines, or you might get lucky and find some at your LHS or used book and magazine store.

Sorry, got to disagree with CBQguy. The answer is: It depends on the era.
GN and NP passenger equipment, in addition to SP&S cars, were seen on trains no. 1 & 2, the Streamliner, which connected Portland-bound passengers from the GN and NP at Spokane. SP&S used its own equipment on local passenger trains.
During the '60s, it was common to see GN diesels combined with SP&S power heading from Vancouver, Wash., down the Oregon Trunk to Bieber, Calif., and connection with the WP. Otherwise, GN and NP diesels rarely if ever appeared anywhere on the SP&S prior to the merger.
GN and NP freight cars were found on the SP&S, but you were just as likely to find SP, ATSF, WP, and others, as the SP&S was primarily a bridge route.
If you’re modeling steam, the SP&S used ex-GN and NP steamers relettered, in most cases, for SP&S, until the late 1930s when SP&S received its first batch of new steam locomotives in the form of three 4-8-4s and several 4-6-6-4s, all virtually identical to NP Class A-3s and Z-6s.
One more thing. I model semi-freelanced SP&S. And what diesels did they have in the 40’s-late 50’s?
