Page 25 of the August Trains Magazine shows 4 GP-38-3’s, remanufactured from former UP GP50’s. What changes to make one become the other?

Deturbo and derate the engine to 2000 hp.

I see they also added the distinctive air filters. There was probably also new control system put in.

But, still use, and rebuild the same engine that was in it as a GP?

Without “derating” it, what would be the H.P. of a non-turboed version of a GP50, or even a GP60, if EMD evr had offered one. Let’s call them GP48/GP58’s.

I’m not sure if they use the same engine. I would assume so.

If I remember correctly, the GP49 is a GP50 without a turbocharger. Am I correct? It is listed as 2800 hp. If I am correct, they must put in a new engine.

They can also re-set the governor to lower RPM’s after taking the turbo off. For a given generator/alternator size/model, you can change the HP output by altering the RPM’s the engine will operate at for each thrttle setting. Also will make the engine last a lot longer between overhauls. GP-50’s and 60’s use the same block, just different power heads and RPM,s.

The GP49 has a 12-cylinder 645F3 turbo. Just as the GP59 is a 12-cylinder 710G3 turbo and the GP39 is a 12-cylinder 645E3 turbo.

Also the GP50 and GP60 do not share a block - the 50 uses the 16-645F3 and the 60 uses the 16-710G3.
