GP30 DCC plug type

Personally I only use Digitrax DH163L0 decoders in my P2K loco’s because of the easy installation and not having to solder in resistors for the lights. It just makes a cleaner looking installation and it only takes 2 minutes to remove the shell and the old board, plug in the new decoder and reinstall the shell.

The DH163L0 is the way to go for the loco that was pictured. Earlier runs may not have the same plug arrangment, but the one pictured is a snap to use a DH163L0 in. It will take all of 5 seconds to install, and you don’t have to fuss with resistors or anything.

I have several PK2 GP30s. I replaced the 1.5v bulbs with 15v bulbs and no resister is needed. The light bulbs are attached to the locomotive control board by a plastic clip. The instructions for changing the light bulbs are included with the PK2.

Is there a decoder out there that is under $20 that would work? I’m not sure I want to spend that much on a decoder again. I already have a D14SR for my Atlas GE DASH 8-40C. I’m not too giddish about getting a $25 decoder when I got the engine for $35.

Thanks again,

Check ebay, there are Internet hobby shops that sell new DCC decoders. You can usually get a new package of four for $65-$75, less than $20 apiece.

Well if you don’t mind soldering wires the NCE D13SRJ is pretty cheap, under $12 in 10-packs and still under $14 individually. Add a couple of bucks for new bulbs or LEDs with resistors and you’re set.

What sound decoder would you guys recomend for diesels? I was thinking about putting sound into it.[:)]

So much for cheap, eh? With what’s available right now today, I would get a Loksound decoder for the GP30.

I second the Loksound. Be aware that you will most likely end up cutting out a hole in the weights for a speaker.
