GP40-2W (guilford, CN, ect.)

Did anyone here ever kitbash one of these? If so, did you use an atlas or athearn model as a start? I’m asking this because I saw one at a train show on a layout but didnt have a chance to ask how they built it, or if it was brass.
Also, what type of safety cab should I use?I plan to build one using the atlas GP40 thats coming out in november.
Any info would be appreciated[8D]

Atlas has not announced a GP40-2, the only announced or in production GP40-2 is Athearn, so…

Detail Associates offers the appropriate cab.

Funny you should mention that. That’s what I doing right now. I started with a Athearn GP40-2 and removed the nose, battery boxes and cab, and installed a Details Associates NA safety cab kit. I cut off the molded front anticlimber and replaced it with one from Cannon. The rear number boards are filled in and rear light removed, and I’ve got the holes drilled for the grab irons. And I just finished up making the recess for the hand brake on the long hood. Next step is making some shields for the air filters out of styrene, then doing up the pilots, and handrails, adding a few details, then paint, decals, final details and finishing touches. I plan on painting as Guilford in the low 500 series. I’ll post some pics when I finish.

Modelers in Canada have been doing this conversion for many years for other units too, like the SD40-2W. The first ones I did I used the CPR (Canadian Prototype Replicas) one piece cab, one of the best around. Sadly these are no longer available. All were done on Athearn models.

thanks for the info everybody. And to dharmon- you mind if I print out what you posted? I wanted to build a guilford loco anyway[^]

Not at all. Hope it helps.

What about the GP38-2W? Oh ok so as far as I know they didn’t make one. But I did[:D]

I made a GP-9W in CP Rail colors a while back. No photo to post at this time though! Modelers would look at it in wonderment, not sure what was going on! A good reason for Athearn blue box engines!

I think that we will see both a GP 38-2W and a GP 40-2W from LL Canada within the next two years.

hey Jeremy, I replied to your posting of your loco on the altas forums (FYI i’m “mustang svo” there) and I think that loco looks good with a GE cab [tup]

I was wondering if someone would notice that.[:D] Yes, I did see your post and thanks for the props. The cab was a leftover from making a Dash 9 cabless unit.
