GP40 or GP40-2?

Can anyone tell me the external differences between a GP40 and a GP40-2? Are there any major differences or were they all internal or changes to the powerplant. Do you think that you could turn a model of a GP40 into a GP40-2 with out too much fuss? As I model the Norfolk Southern, I’ve seen that lately they have repainted some of their Conrail GP40-2’s into their gorgeous black color scheme!!! So I would like to do the same!!

Any help would be a Appreciated!

Terry,Here is what I would do.I would add a sight glass on the left side and let it go at that. But,Athearn does make a GP40-2,why bother? I have used Athearn GP40-2s for GP40s by filling in the sight glass, ditto for a GP38.This was before Atlas release the GP38 and 40.Now,If you want to power a Athearn GP40-2 shell with a Atlas drive this can be done also.

The main difference between the GP40 and GP40-2 is that the -2 stands for an internal electronics upgrade, that goes for the sd40-2 and the GP38-2, etc. Have fun and good luck. Pete

That and a bolted rather than hinged battery boxes. Picky, picky!

Terry here again!! One thing that I have found strange in pictures that I have seen, is that older pictures of Norfolk Southern’s GP40"s they seem to have the classic type of EMD sanding lines. However, in the photo of the one unit that NS has repainted(which is a-2)there are no sanding lines present! I don’t know it could be just the angle of the photo.
