GP9 engines

is it possible to change a GP9’s engine from a EMD 567 to the bigger 645 modle, will it still fit in inside? also what kin dof rebuilds did railroads do to GP9’s to increase power? thanks

You can rebuilt a 567 with 645 assemblies… Ask Metro North…

Milwaukee Road too… that’s how they got their “GP20s” (not the same as the EMD model).

645 assemblies can be placed in a 567C crankcase, which is what GP9s came with new. Many railways have done so. The resulting 16-645C engine can be run at up to 2,000 hp (net), but if you want to run it consistently at 2,000 hp you will need to install more radiator capacity than what the GP9 came with standard, and you should expect that the engine will not very durable relative to a standard 16-567C.

If you really want a C crankcase to run forever, set the governor to reduce maximum rpm from 835 to 800 rpm, reducing the engine from 1,750 hp to 1,500 hp.

You can put a 16-645E into the GP9 carbody but there will be issues with the electrical and cooling system, unless you want to reduce hp to 1800 or so. I don’t know why anyone would want to do that on anything more than an ad hoc basis.

You can upgrade the 567 to 645 and max engine hp is 2000 but it will not get you a 2000 hp engine unless you chande the Main Generator and some other electricals.
Its like using a 125 Mercury with a 60 hp propeller.

What about putting a 645 into a larger 567C engine like the SD9? could that engine be rebuilt with the proper cooling?

Cheers!

SD9 and GP9 are mechanically identical except for the bogies – three-axle vs. two-axle. The SD9 and GP9 have the identical engine – 16-567C. Using 645 power assemblies in a C crankcase, or installing a 645E crankcase, requires you to solve the same issues in an SD9 that you would in a GP9.
