Grade crossing gantry design (Need plans!)

Hi,

I asked this over in the layout forum, but came up blank, so I thought I’d try here:

I (will  have a ‘live’ grade xing on my layout. I have Tomars grade xing gates connected to a tortoise - Very nice.

However, at least where I live (N. CA), in addition to the gates themselves there are two gantries extending out over the roadway with lights. I’ve been unable to find any kits for these, and was told by Tomar that they have custom made 'em at $450 per pair (!!)…

Given that I don’t own anything that cost $450 my next idea is to make 'em myself - I could take my trusty digital camera and a tape measure to the prototype but am hoping someone may be able to point me in the direction of some plans (Protoype or model) for these things.

Thanks in advance,
Ian

How about some of these from the Tennesse DOT. The first one has the overhead cantinlever part.

Hi,

Thanks for the info! Those pdf’s have been stashed among others!

However, on a brief view (ie, I may have missed it) the gantry part seems to show that classical cop-out of “lights hanging in space, some variable distance from the supporting pole!”

I found the pic I was looking for - And a pic here is definitely worth 1k words:

[Once I figure out posting images that is… Grrrr…]

From what I was reading the variable distance is because of the varying widths of lanes of traffic. The diagram of the cantinlever span shows that the end of the span is directly above the crown of the road so in that case the cantinlever span would be the same length as the lane is wide plus the distance from the edge of the road to the center of the vertical pole. Maybe I’m off in left field here but thats how I understand it and how I’m interpreting what your saying.

Yep, I guess my attempt at humour failed a little…

But, I’ve now figured (I think) how to let anyone interested look at a picture of the thing I’m after - I’m not a river counter, so something close(ish!) to this would be awesome:

Thanks again,
Cheers,

Well, a quick look on Walthers turned up this one
http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/525-1190 for $38.99. It is a different style though.
and also two other styles coming out soon that don’t have pictures yet. Item #s 525-1191 and 525-1192. I’ll see what I can turn up elsewhere.

Thankyou!

You won’t believe how long I spent gazing at the printed version of the Walthers catalog without seeing that!

No picture, no register I guess!..

In any event, I reckon that sucker will be a perfect basis for a kitbashing session sometime soon.

Once again,
Thanks

Ian
