Grain Hopper Help

Hi

I have a small grain elevator on my layout and have beed looking around (without any luck) for some covored grain hoppers like this one:

Does anyone know where to find them?

This car is an Ingalls 4750 built in the early 80’s. Nobody makes an exact match for that car so your best bet would be to start of with an Intermountain PS 4750 and get out some styeren for that top chord. The ribs are notched at the bottom on the intermountain model but not on the Ingalls car, as well as the lower sill is a stub on the Ingalls. If you want to get picky the end and side ladders are different but it all depends on how close you want to match it. Then of course you would have to decal it yourself.

According to my research, that car is a Pullman Standard 4750. That would make it an Intermountain car. Check out their website. If you want a close lettering match, you may have to decal your own. They do some dark green ones, though. I think. It does look a little funny in the picture, but that’s what the book says.

How bout this?

Might use Accurail’s 2000 series cyclindrical hoppers too. There would be some variety that way. Athearn has a car similar to the photo as well.

I agree with Tomnoy3. It looks like one of the Ingalls-built cars. It has been a while since I have seen one, but as I recall, the ends of these cars have a somewhat distinctive arch at the top. They also sit somewhat lower (height of the side sheets is shorter).

There are photos in the C&NW Final Freight Car Roster by Piersen and Kulbersh. If all you are interested in is a similar looking car of the same capacity, there are models out there that will stand-in. The Ingalls car would have to be scratch-built or a kitbash. It was pretty rare as a prototype with only a few hundred ever built.

Tjere is/was a Walthers kit that looked like that

Atlas Trainman has Thrall 4750 cu ft covered hoppers available. CNW repaint-patch 3 packs have been announced. The Accurail cars are good for CNW 180xxx series cars. Athearn makes P-S 4740 and FMC 4700 (ex-MDC). Walthers makes P-S 4427, low and high side. All of these car types, and others, are seen freely intermixed. For grain (corn, soybean) and wheat service 4700 cu ft cars are common. Sand and cement usually go in shorter, 2-bay covered hoppers.

Weaver makes a similar car to that in O scale too.

(Since there was no scale mentioned, the Resident Crazy O Scaler had to pipe up![:-^])

S-Helper does a slabsided covered hopper in S scale too.

I’m not in the loop for HO and N scale anymore, but if I reacll correctly, Atheran made a similar hopper too.

Hi

Sorry I didn’t mention it but, it is in N Scale.
