Good day all. I am installing ditch lights in a GP 40 and the directions say to coat the leads from the bulbs with insulation paint. Is this a special type of paint, or is there a substitute that I can use. On the topic of decoders, can I run the leads from the ditch lights to the common wire for the headlight or do they have to be on a separate common terminal? The decoder is the DASR from NCE. Thanks for all replies.

the copper wire used in a transformer is insulated with laquer, this can be purchased at almost any Home Depot or Lowe’s. I have never tried it in this type of application but have used it on the TV Transmitter I was in charge of, you might give it a test try on the bench before instalation. Cover the wires with laquer, hookup a transformer and test with a volt ohm meter from leed to leed.
Home Depot sells a product (called, I believe, Liquid Insulation) that seems to be a liquid latex. I used some, and it gave good results, on some wires that had to be reasonably flexible. Most common paints will eventually tend to chip off if the wires are flexed regularly.

And, to answer your second question; You are correct. You will use the headlight ground for the ditchlights. Your GOW bulbs are probably 1.5V so you are going to want to use a 1K resistor for both leads coming from each of the ditch lights to ground.
