Grains Lines in Southern Saskatchewan

I’ve been wondering about how many of the grains lines in southern Saskatchewan are still operating or have been pulled up. I know the line from Moose Jaw to the USA border crossing at North Portal/Portal is used heavily by Canadian Pacific to get trains to the Twin Cities & Chicago but know little if anything about the rest of the lines.

Some years ago a fellow hiked along a Canadian Pacific rail line in south western Saskatchewan but didn’t mention if any trains went by as he hiked along it. I’ve seen Canadian National run grain trains though their line in Moose Jaw but they were talking about abandoning those lines some years ago.

Many ,many , non-main line rails have been pulled up in Sask. a few remain and some taken over by smaller privately owned companies, but most towns now in Sask. there is no train service although a few survive, main lines are still active and very busy, the line from the “Jaw” to North Portal ( still referred to as the “SOO Line”) is very active also, Moose Jaw being a massive yards and repair facility along with the Heavy Haul Division. CN has a small facility in Moose Jaw which runs mostly North and South and they were running trains this summer, so I assume they are still operating on a reduced basis. You can drive a lot of kilometres in Southern Saskatchewan and NOT see a train or tracks, but watch out for giant 3 trailer grain trucks smashing up the roads, all over the province.
