Grand Canyon Railway DOES have an F40PH.

Cool to see a modern diesel like that on GC. I always told people they only had FPA-4’s and FPB-4’s. Sorry. (i didn’t take that picture and i’ve never roade the GCry.)

They’ve had the F40PH’s since April or May of 2005 which made me look forward to see them in June 2005 when I went to the Grand Canyon when I was over there they had 1 in service then 3 setting in a shop where you can get on the train near Willams.Sadly I got stuck with a streamer instead of a F40PH,1940’s coaches,a singing indian, a headache, and a guy who sang something but I had a fun time.

So they have 4 F40PH’s? I know they also have 4 FPA-4’s and 2 FPB-4’s. I thought they would stay vintage forever, but a F40PH could cetaily pull more cars than a FPA.

What’s really interesting is how they MU their steam locomotive to the F-40 [:D]

i was there last summer I was pulled a by an F40 on the wayback to williams on the way up it was steam

I read somewhere that the GCRY bought them for their head end power capacity as their head end power cars and undercar generators were close to being maxed out on the longer trains. The railway ridership just keeps going up. It will be interesting to see what else they buy to handle the passenger business.

Yes, they’re getting more popular. I’ve seen several TV shows on it which were taped in the mid-1990’s and they only ran 5-6 cars w/ 2 FPA-4’s back then. Yes, they have hostlers(?) controls in their steamers so the diesel(s) can be controled from the steamer- but not like MU’ing w/ diesels - there are 2 seperate controls(one for the steamer, one for the diesel(s) I bet they never get anything bigger than a F40PH.

Do they still use thier FAs? Is there any way to be sure your train has FAs before buying a ticket?
