Question,
Would most of the advanced modelers use the very fine turf or the more course clumps for grass areas on an N scale layout? Also any advice on making the scene more realistic would be great. Is it good mixing colors? etc.
Thanks,
Joe

Probably in the 2mm for N scale. Most places sell it like Walthers and Scenic Express
ratled
Use a fine texture for lawns, add coarser materials for more texture away from manacured lawns. For areas of brush, use foliage clumps lichen, etc. Yes, definitely mix and blend colors. Different types of grass are different colors, some places have one type of grass, some have several of different types of grass thus slightly different colors. Use several different greens, a few yellows or browns mixed in spots, If you have water or low spots where water could collect a lush green, possible longer grasses.
Good luck,
Cowman makes a great point… Pick up different grass colors from Woodland Scenics, Scenic Express, Noch, JTT. Different companies offer slightly different shades, which is important so all your grasses do not share the same shade.
And yes for N scale you want to use the fine texture for lawns and such. For longer grass I agree that static grass is the way to go with a little coarse turf thrown in.
Scenic Express offers some nice products that mix static grass with other materials to help create scenes like pastures, alpine meadows and such.
I took my many grass shades from the different manufacturers and created a “Grass Shade Sample Board”…
A very experienced expert model railroader gave me some very good advice, Hey just open your eyes…lol That ain’t no lie, seriously be cognizant of your surroundings Your asking a question about grass color I know this isn’t the best time of year to observe it but hen it gets warmer take a look around and see all grass isn’t the same bright shade of green nor is it as flat as a billiard table. So mixing different brands colors and textures is excellent advice. Being as you model N scale your kind of forced to use nothing but fine ground cover in most places but I’m sure you can get away with medium and some other stuff dependng on where the grass is located etc.
I have one shaker bottle with some turf coloring mixed with a couple of different shades of grass sort of a blend that I use here and there it looks ok to me but I’m getting better at it as I go along.
