grass

Does moss work as grass on a model railroad?

It may look the part, but I’d prefer to use imitation moss as it won’t need watering. There’s a thread about Pot Toppers which is the stuff I’d use if it was available here.

For years we used dried and dyed Lichen which is a form of moss. I think they added glycerin to keep it flexible too.

Keep an eye on those garden shops for imitation plants that will look good in your scale. I always check the $2 shops too.

Moss is a live plant and will dry up and die if not watered. Watering causes problems with benchwork and other things, dead moss doesn’t look so good.

If you are looking for cheap ways to make ground cover, the old favorite, sawdust, dyed to the color needed is a possibility. There are a number of ideas for using natural materials for scenic material. You can search for them in the search box to the right.

Good luck,

depending on how much grass you need try going to Micheal’s crafts and pick up pot toppers there these fake grass things intended to be put into flower pots when using artificial flowers you’ll need to separate the two side which is no big deal.

As a general rule of thumb you don’t want anything live or real on your layout. Not even when you use real dirt for ground cover. You first need to put it in an oven to kill off any microorganisms living in the soil oh yeah the no real stuff applies to water also.
