Great early railroading DVD

I took a chance and picked up a DVD at a model train show this weekend and I have to say I’m pretty impressed. Most of the DVD’s you find are modern films showing restored locomotives. I had a hard time finding vintage footage. This DVD came through in spades! For 10 Canadian dollars, this DVD titled “10 Glimpses of Railroad History 1935-1959” shows 10 short original movies on various railway subjects. I believe these movies are public domain so they may be on youtube etc. The distributor is a hobby supply company called “Muskoka Computes and Hobbies” located here in Canada. This DVD is volume #3.Some of the videos include lots of early Pennsylvania RR footage (including great footage of the GG1- I didn’t know it was also used to pull freight) , a 1941 film on the history of the Chesapeake & Ohio and my favorite- “Last of the Giants” The Story of Untion Pacific’s Big Boys. The Big Boy movie is fantastic! Great footage both on the rails and in the shops. If you see it at a swap meet I highly recommend it. The website is www.muskokacomputes.com

Todd

Todd,

If you want to see some great vintage steam action and Canadian to boot, I recommend the Greg Scholl DVD’s called Canadian Steam. There are 3 in all, 1957,1958 and 1959. Both the '58 and '59 also have the original sound which is I believe, quite rare. 1957 was shot in B.C. and both '58 and '59 in Sask. and Manitoba. They are a lot more than $10 mind you at about $35 but well worth it. I have all 3 and have watched them many times. Your LHS may have them. I know that Credit Valley Trains in Streetsville stocks them. I must admit that I have a bit of a soft spot for this film as I spent many an hour beside the CN mainline in 1959 not far from where some of the film was shot. Nothing like steam!!
