Before throwing away those old pencils, remove the metal band that holds the eraser. These make great looking trash bins in HO Scale. You’ll find that these metal bands vary from one pencil to another, but that’s ok. Not all trash bins look the same in real life…

The trash bin I used on my work caboose was recycled from a #2 lead:
