In this year’s Great Model Railroad’s editorial, Steven Otte suggests we let him know of future Great Model Railroads. Seems to me this forum has some prime candidates. Not to slight anyone, but my first votes go to Wayne, Ed, and Mel. Please add your favorites.
Thanks for your generous assessment of my layout, Ray, but I doubt that it will ever make the grade.
Right now, I’d consider it about 25% “done” (done being a very unspecific value) and given the constraints of time, I doubt that it will even get to 50% “done”.
I do heartily agree with your other choices, though.
Like Wayne I need to bow out. My layout is constantly torn up, I’m constantly working on it doing up grades and right now almost all of my 500 trees are removed, all my power poles, all but a few vehicles are in boxes on the shelf and my control panel is a total disaster.
I started a remodel of my control panel last January and had a serious Arthritis flare up then it was too hot to work in the garage. I’m shooting for Christmas to have it back running but next summer for the scenery.
I have been able to get all my Arduino stuff ready to install in my control panel and I’ve run most of the cabling for my random lighting. I still have to run the cabling for my Arduino signal upgrade and a slug of optical sensors to install in the track for occupancy detection.
Old age isn’t easy and Arthritis makes everything worse, it’s really slow going. My great grand daughter was helping me but they moved further away so it’s just me.
I want to thank Ray and the group for considering my layout good enough to be mentioned, really pops the buttons on ones shirt.
There are plenty on here that should be included in GMR.
.
Steve-O has asked many people in here from time to time to pen articles, but I don’t know how many have.
.
I did write and submit one, but it went nowhere.
.
These forums could be a great source of material, but since it has alreacy been “published” in here, I do not know how that would effect the editorial staff’s decision to print it.
Wayne, MR has many many times featured layouts that are not finished. My impression is they include layouts which have sufficient finished scenes to have plenty of material to feature. They sometimes toss in one or two in-progress photo’s as well, which are useful too readers because it demonstrates how you get there and is instructional.
You certainly have posted scads and scads of photo’s, so it’ plenty clear you have more than enough fodder for what MR might need. Your choice, but I think most here can see what is plain enough.
If I understand the process correctly, you would write the article and sunbmit the photos. You choose the photos. So, no more excuses, Wayne.
Oh, one other thing. Please do not submit Bertram’s as one of your photos. I do not need others competing for it when you decide to head for that Great Layout in the Sky. [(-D]
I also submitted an article, was considered, but I was told it was “too short and not enough prototype info and photos”. I agree with these nominations, and I have seen Garry’s layout several times in trackside photos. As for the rest of you, maybe we should all spend less time on the forums and more time working on our layouts?
While I have had enough articles published to qualify for an NMRA Author certificate, I have also had numerous articles rejected. The feedback " too short and not enough prototype info and photos" is just telling you what you need to do to fix the article. Expound a little more and add some more info and a few more photos and try again.
My last article I submitted was completely rejected, it was re-written completely on a different slant, accepted, but still went through two minor re-writes (tweaks) before it was finally accepted. Don’t expect your first draft submission to be completely accepted as is. Expect to have to make changes a couple different times.
Some day I may actually get mine. Yes, I’ve contacted customer suppoort. Every since the changeover over the Summer, I have not gotten ANY special issues on Zinio - last thing was MRP 2019. In June or July I ordered the Locomotive 2019 issue, STILL haven’t gotten that one despite multiple calls and emails.
