Great news/ interesting discovery

Hi everyone. I usually post in the MRR section but this is special.

I have been given permission to ride my bike down to the mainline to take pictures! The mainline I’m talking about is near the Sperling/ Burnaby lake Skytrain station and usually has some rail traffic on it at certain times. I had another rail line 5 minutes from my house, but it was torn up and converted to a green space and recreational pathway, which leads right to the mainline! Because I’m just getting back into riding my bike, I am willing to try this. I may be able to contribute to posting photos on here very soon. I was so excited…

…that I found this interesting site:

www.railroadradio.net

I found this while looking for rail traffic information. I found the area I wanted but it just showed gibberish. Does anyone have any idea as to what this means?

Hey, that is good news. How did you proceed with this? Did you talk to a railroad manager or security official? IWas the permission “written” or verbal?

umm…not exactly. Permission to ride down to the tracks from my mother. Not from an official.

sorry for the resulting confusion.

But what about the site?

Ha ha, had to get permisson from your Mom… that’s too funny. [(-D]

I remember those days. Now that I am married and all grown up I can do what ever I want … when she lets me Now, its. “Hey honey, can I go out for a few hours?” Things dont change much. [;)]

You stay safe on your ride, watch out for those yahoos in the cars. And post some pics, would love to see them.

I think what the web site is about, are the radio frequencies that the different rail roads use in the various parts of the country. if you have a scanner, you can pick up the rail crews talking and also here the dispatch. But the main thing, is picking up the defect detectors. On the mian lines, you have defect detectors that will give automated messages to the crews to let them know if they have any defects.

They detectors mostly look for “hot boxes”, bad wheel bearings that are heating up from friction. Most give out air temperature, speed, and axle count. The trick though, is knowing where the detectors are. Then, once you pick up on the signals, you know when trains are coming, what direction, speed and how big. Also, if you are sitting on mainline, that normally has a lot of traffic, and its slow… listening to the scanner can help give clues to what’s going. You might hear of a engine that went bad or repair work on the tracks that’s holding up the line. So, once you figure it all out, you can find out if you should wait and come back, or if the good stuff is coming soon.

That website, I belive, gives the numbers to the channels for that rail road and region.

Good luck, hope that helps. There are others on this site that know alot more, hopefully, they will chime in.

Thats mainly because she cares about me, so what’s so funny about that?

Hey hey, easy amigo. I was only haveing a little fun and my little comment there was loaded with sarcasm. Hence, the whole poking fun at me, and my wife… things dont change…er… um.

Well if you didnt get the humor, then I guess you are youngeer than I thought. My fault there for assuming.

I would hope though, that after all I wrote in the rest of the 2 posts, that wasnt all you saw.

Good luck on your trip. Cant wait for the summer to end here so I can get out, its just to freakin hot to hang around outside.

Well, it is hard to hear sarcasm on the internet, but okay. What you said was only a joke. I’m actually 14. It would be funny if a 40 year old man asked his mother if he could cycle to the tracks [(-D].

BTW I have had my share of wackos on the Skytrain. People I know have even more stories. I could actually tell some of them, which may give Skytrain a bad name. PM me if you have stories to share, because I might share too. The road I will stop at is a small two lane road that branches off from the highway. If there is any trouble, I run to the fire department across the street.

What he was laughing about is that, even when a man leaves “mommy” and moves in with the “little woman”, now he has to answer to two women. When you get hitched, it will all be crystal clear…or your life will be oh-so miserable. [:D]

However, CP, there was more to the humour, at least for me. We all came to understand that you had sought and obtained permission from the railway,…so when you admitted that you had only gotten over the one hurdle, your Mom, it all came crashing down for us. I think that is what led to the laughter in some part.

I hope your day works well.

Lucky…we live about 5 miles from a rail line, and that one doesn’t get much traffic.

Oh, hehe, you guys thought I obtained permission from the railway? LOL! A little bit of a misunderstanding there. Hopefully I get permission from a yard official in the future because I know a number of areas acessible via walking, biking, or transit. Unfortunatly, I have to go to ANOTHER camp followed by a week with my dad (unknown if he’s going camping with us), so the biking thing may have to wait a little while, or I could go before camp.

Gotta go!

I’m home over my lunch hour, then back to the salt mine! I’d love to ride my bike somewhere to watch trains instead. Enjoy it while you can.[:P]
