First we had Jethro Tull’s album “Rock Island”, now we have Great Northern, the band! I doubt these kids have any clue as to what the real GN was, but it’s as great a name for a band as any i suppose. They are actually a very talented, melodic trio from Los Angeles that are very popular with the college age “underground” pop/rock fans. Check them out if you are inclined… Perhaps we can get them to film their next music video from the cab of SD45 Hustle Muscle!!! ok, a bit much, i know[:)]
Maybe they really DO know what GN was! After all, “Grand Funk Railway” was a deliberate pun.

There used to be a band somewhere in Pennsylvania called “The Black Diamond Express”.
Name comes from the famous Lehigh Valley Railroad train.
I saw their webpage years ago, they looked like a cheesy lounge band.
I cant find the page now, I dont think they exist anymore…
although there does appear to be a different band with that name, in Scotland of all places! weird…

I just ran across that pic yesterday, of course this was an actual railroad band.
I’ve only heard one song by Great Northern, not too bad. I also have a couple of albums by Norfolk and Western (indie folk rock) and Chessie (experimental-ambient-electronic). I’m a music freak…Looking over my iTunes, it seems I also have a song by the band Southern Pacific that someone mentioned, but I don’t recall ever listening to it. Looks like it came from a compilation that I bought for a different song.

They are on the opposite end of the nation in Portland, Oregon. That is like a band in Norfolk, Virginia naming themselves Portland, Spokane, & Seattle.

On Chicago’s forst album, they called themselves Chicago Transit Authority. CTA sued. They now openly admit they did it on purpose knowing CTA would sue just to get some headline exposure for the band.
There’s also a country rockish kinda something or other band simply called “Train”.
