I think if the green goat and green kid take off (and I think locomotives in the 1500-2000 HP range will eventually be needed as the SWs, GPs and Alcos age) then we will see some models (perhaps in 5-10 years).
Maybe they could resurrect the pancake motor, and get it right this time…
It seems like the “Green Goat” would be a pretty easy kitbash, the body looks similar to a more recent Geep–you could hack up a low-nose GP38, add a little styrene and after-market body parts to get a close similarity.
One could always power it with a SPUD or PDT power truck (Why, in this world of tiny electronics, aren’t there more companies that make power trucks?) or make your own low-profile drive (shouldn’t be too hard) with a small can motor–the Green Goat is intended as a yard switcher, so there’s not much need for it to be able to lug around great long stretches of cars.
It’s a prototype test-bed, not a production unit, so of course it’s going to be a little ugly–and I can see why they’d want good visibility for a yard switcher. I imagine that if they make a road-engine version it will have a higher profile.
Road engines! I hope they don’t look anything like this![:P][(-D][swg]
Dougal - You’re on target. I remember when I first saw the SD40-2s I basically thought "What was EMD doing?! But, in the late 80s, I saw a picture of a “Quintet” of SD40-2s in a TRAINS magazine. Since the sun was in the background, all you saw were the silhouettes. Then I said wow! The photo conveyed: tough, rugged railroad horsepower!
One website mentioned it being on a GP-9 frame.
It seems to me that to make one all that needs to be done is to buy a cheap
GP-9 and remove the motors and all of the weights and then divide the body into sections to “butcher” into the right shape then a can-motor can be added into the cab and the rest can be filled with weights.
Next would be to repaint it.
I hope a major railroad orders some so I can see what their paint job would look like.
The base unit was a GP9 - ex Southern Pacific - we removed the engine power unit up at our site in Squamish BC -Then they took the rest to Southern Rail in New Westminster BC to creat the Goat
And how can you not love anything based on a GP9? (Jetrock harbors an irrational love for early Geeps.) So not only is it environmentally friendly, it’s even RECYCLED!!!
Many engines have been incredibly ugly–witness the Camelback/Mother Hubbard style of steam switcher.
[:O][X-)][%-)][oops][#wstupid][D)]----------I just can’t seem to look at this and call it a Locomotive!
Well, the SD40-2 grew on me, and the Amtrak Genesis units are “slowly” growing on me, so as for this “critter”, who knows?----------------------------------- Naaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!! [:P][#wstupid]
