I guess it depends on which one you are going to.
I went to one here in Cleveland a few years back and was very disappointed in it. There was also another local trains show the same weekend, and it was at least 5 times larger.
I also went to one in Niles, Ohio and it was very good.
Look at it this way, if you learn one thing or pick up one deal, then it is worth the few buck it cost to get in. If you live close to it, and aren’t doing anything else that weekend, go for it.
It’s not so much who sponsors the show that makes it successful, it’s the location. This is what I’ve found. The north east coast has the most trains so shows in the Philly/NJ/NY area have a good selection. Pittsburg should be good too. In the midwest, the GATS show in Weaton ILL is freakin huge and lots of trains. On the west coast, CA has the most trains and Cal Stewart has a large selection.
I thought about going to the Cal-Stewart show but if you aren’t a member you are very limited in the time you can spend at the show. We have gone to some of the GATS events in Anahiem and San Diego, the Anahiem show seems to be the larger of the two events with more sellers and larger operating layouts.
I’ve been to the GATS shows and they were all right, but I have found that there are some local shows that are much better. One show that I recommend is in the spring at the fair grounds near Springfield, Ohio (40 miles west of Columbus on I-70). Addmission is cheap and the parking is free. Table rental must also be pretty cheap because at many of the tables people are selling their excess train stuff at great prices. [:)]
The worst show I have ever attended was in Cincinnati, on a Sunday when the Bungals were playing (I should say trying to play) and it was a Computer/Train Show combined. [:(]
does anyone know were i can find out what a set of trains i have is worth? I have a Santa Fe 2383 engine and 5 passenger cars along with tracks ect.
Thanks
Information about the Santa Fe 2383 can be found here:

For value, you might check ebay.com, or other auction web sites.
Oooh thats too bad, What do ya want for 'em ? J/K every Santa Fe pair I’ve seen commands the high buck, a set should realize a tidy sum. That seems to be THE quintessential diesel paint scheme. Although I prefer (and would sell my neighbor for) the NYC scheme.
How do they do that ?
Now I know I’m going to wait a few weeks for my run to the Burgh. That show coupled with the reopening of the CSC display cinches it.
