Well haven’t ran a model train in 60 days. Having serious withdrawls. This is the first time since I’ve been here that I have been able to view the forum. I see that Atlas is releasing the GP 40-2 phII. Anyone got any intel on when they will release some Chessie models? I’ve been putting a little deployment cash on the side for when the come out.
Greetings and thank you for your service. When I was on my overseas tour, many years ago, my modeling desires were in remission. I could have made a layout, but no way to get it home when the romote tour was over.
Setting a little aside as you go is a good way to have a good way to have a nice chunk of change to get the layout going when you get back to a suitable location.
Wishing you a safe tour and plenty of layout space when you return.
I can;t say it much better. I supect the GP40s wll be in about 4 to 6 months possibly 8, though I could be optimistic. Know anybody who could reerve one for ya? I’m sure an LHS would be happy to hold one (two, four?for you considering your line of work.
Thanks for your service! Get yourself a Walthers catalog. Something to look at until you return. I’ll be glad to send you one if I know your address, and HO or N scale.
As other posters have stated, I can’t stress enough. Thank you for your service. Might I suggest you order a Walthers Reference Book. They may be expensive, but they will definitely give an idea of some of the latest products.
Grenadier1943: THANK YOU for your service!!! Not to get political, but there are still some of us who GREATLY APPRECIATE what you and your comrades-in-arms are doing.
To all of you in Afghanistan - stay safe and have a safe return! Should you run into some of our boys being on service over there as well, extend my greetings to them!
Grenadier 1943… I guess it sounds a bit overused by now, but I just wanted to add my “thank you” to all the others, for serving our country there in Afghanistan. I am a Viet Nam vet and a retired M/Sgt, and I recall the model railroad withdrawal’s that I had several times over the years.
I checked the Atlas site, and I only saw the U30B available in Chessie colors, listed as “a new model”, and it said it was available in stores as of 1 July 2009. The GP40 wasn’t listed in Chessie markings that I could see. Glad to have you on the forum…
May I ask, sir, is there any railroad activity in Afghanistan? The newspeople who report to us do not describe any, as I recall. I was in Tunisia a couple of years ago, and enjoyed exceedingly my brief rail excursion in that country.
Let me add my thanks for your service, and my good wishes for a safe return for you and the rest of the allied team over there.
I too would be interested to hear about the state of the railroads in Afghanistan. I’d imagine that security on the tracks themselves would be nearly impossible once you’re out of the cities, though, so it wouldn’t surprise me if trains were confined to the few well-controlled, populated areas.
Grenadier, thank you from the bottom of my and my family’s heart. You and all our boys (and girls) in service deserve a parade when you come home, no matter what. I would have to agree with everyone else, get a Walthers catalogue so you won’t go completely insane while there.
Wazzzy, I’m at FOB Bostick, Northeastern part of the country. Right on the border with Pakistan. I’m an Infantryman, but work as a “TOC MONKEY”. Night battle captain.
All, thanks for all the support. We all appreciate it very much. Don’t forget that there are also civilians here. KBR folks are a great asset to us. They cook and repair our living quarters. Without them it would be alot rougher.
The wife sends me all my model railroad magazines as soon as she gets them. What I really miss is watching Chessie4155 videos on YouTube. I haven’t seen any kind of railroads in Afganistan. Of course I’ve only seen Bagram Air Base and FOB Bostick. We travel by helicopter and then only at night. Where I’m at it’s all mountains. Not much room for roads, even though they are trying to improve one here.
