Greetings from Italy and info about CSX

Hi,
I’m writing from Italy for the first time on this forum and I want to greet all the members.
Having built a layout on CSX theme, I’d wi***o place some questions, please, also becouse I’ve bought some CSX models but I don’t know if they are chronological correct.
When GP38 and U23B has been retired?
Still Conrail continues to operate on American Railroad and which are its locos today?
There are some Amtrak trains that operate on CSX tracks?
Do BNSF, NS and UP operate on CSX tracks?
I’ve also bought some Genesis SD70M NYSW, do they operate on CSX tracks?
It is possible to use CSX, NYSW and P&W together?

First let me say[#welcome] to you ciortato, from all of us at the MR forums, were glad you finally decided to start posting.

I can help you with one of your questions, well sort of. On some RR lines, GP38s still run. I can’t tell you for sure about CSX though.

A tip, you might want to post this question on the Trains forum side of things, as they would know about the prototype part, or maybe on the prototype info part of the MR forum.

First off welcome to the boards.

As someone who also is modeling csx I’ll and help you out the most that I can. ok here’s what I can tell you. gp38 and23b still run on csx today. Conrail was bought by csx and norfolk southern so it’s a common sight to see conrail engines and cars on csx lines. Some of the equipment will hold original numbers but most engines have been assigned csx numbers. There are many amtrak trains that run on csx the two closes to where I live is the three river and lakeshore limited.Remember csx travels almot all of the eastern united states Then the last question couple questions I’m not sure of about them but if you search for 'CSX merger family tree". It will give you all the fallen flags that csx has taken over.

Your question about "does NS,UP&BNSF run on CSXT raillines?
Oh yes…I have seen pure UNION PACIFIC power on an westbound empty coal train on CSXT rails at clevland,ohio. where I live here in nebraska I see it all. on the UP&BNSF I have seen just about everything…like Ive seen on the BNSF,pure CSXT-UP and even pure NS power on coal trains. On UP…well thats on going.oooooooh don’t forget about the KCS too. I hope this help’s. mrlove/blair,neb.

ciortato, welcome. CSX does run GP38s but for the most part they are used in the yards and on locals ( delivering cars to industries). The U23Bs have been regulated to work train duty and are painted orange with black letters and underframe. You can run any modern railroad locomotives that you like CSX uses quite a bit of rental units. I hope this helps you and would like to see pictures if you have any.

I live in the northeast so I’ll try to answer all your questions.

The GP38s are mostly RC now and the U23Bs where painted orange for MOW service until last year when all were sold or scrapped

Conrail was purchased on June 1st 1999 by CSX and NS (CSX got the CR Chicago Line, River Line and Boston Line plus other smaller line).

Some CR engines are still in CR blue on CSX woth CSX #s and most CR units NS got are in CR blue with a black or white patch.

Amtrak does run on CSX in quite a few places. Check www.amtrak.com for a system map.

CSX pretty much put the NYS&W under when they got Conrail but the SD70Ms are on lease to the Indiana & Ohio.

Yeah you could run the P&W and NYS&W together because even though they don’t connect with each other they are only 5 miles from connecting! They both connect with CSX on the ex CR lines.

The Suzie Q is alive but not as healthy as in preConrail merger days. It is very sad to see all the many negative effects that mergers have on railroads. The Conrail split up was not a good thing for the Q. I personally would have like to see a midwestern or western railroad have acquired Conrail so that the majority of Conrail would have remained intact. That is being said from a railfanning point of view.

From a modeling standpoint I really don’t know how the merger has affected those who model Conrail, CSX , or Nazi Southern ( as Dougal calls it [}:)] ) That poses a good question for a topic. [;)]

In the 80’s ATSF and SP wanted to buy it along with CSX and NS. ATSF and SP dropped out and decided to merger with each other instead (the infamous SPSF) but NS and CSX kept on until they split CR.

The funny thing is NS and CSX were both only a year or two old when they first tried to get Conrail.

Dougal, good to see you around again!!![:D] Would’ve been kinda neat if CR could’ve gotten the “Cotton Belt” as terms of the SP-UP merger. Life in Texas would be alot different as well as in your neck of the woods.

NO.1.CONRAIL should have “never” been sold in the first place!

The split was a small scale SP/UP merger with a small scale meltdown (notas big but big enough).
