Greg's 5-week Western US train extravaganza, Part 2: Winslow

I don’t think I’ll be sleeping much from L.A. to Winslow, so I’ll probably be collapsing on my hotel bed at the La Posada when I’m able to check in. When I come to, I anticipate being able to be satisified with the constant parade of trains on the BNSF transcon… but if I get tired of the same scene at the hotel, I have this image in my mind of hiring the only cab in town (or something like that) to take me out to the next siding up or down the line… and come back for me in 3 hours or something like that.

Realistic? Absurd? Am I even in danger of getting bored in Winslow? (I’m not expecting any girls in flatbed Fords for entertainment…)

Is there actually a yard in Winslow as my SPV suggests?

Has anyone else even been to Winslow to railfan?

Thanks…

I have also railfanned at Winslow and Flagstaff. It is beautiful scenery and a constant parade of trains. Winslow does have what appears to be crew change point and maybe a maintenance of way base. At one time there was a roundhouse, you can still see the remants on the west side of town. Most trains do stop at Winslow, so the speed is not spectacular, but there are many trains. The lines pass right next to your lodging I think.

Dang… well, I guess I’ll just have to take what I can get.

And yes - the main will be right outside the hotel. I’m definitely looking forward to it!

I assume the old roundhouse remains are still on BNSF property?

I would bet a fellow forum member like Mudchicken can provide better detail, but near the MOW base there appears to be the foundation of a roundhouse and turntable. It is on BNSF property but you can get a pretty good view off of 2nd Ave. if it is not obstructed.
