Click on link and view colors, you will see Grimy Black. If you think the price is high, look again, it’s for two ounces, not one.

Dark Gray auto primer, in a rattle can. Krylon or Rustoleum.
Floquil/Polly Scale ‘Grimy Black’ has a green cast to it. The auto primer you mention is just a dark grey. The Micro-Mark paint is quite close.
Jim
It`s still available at testors.com http://www.testors.com/product/0/4887/_/Grimy_Black_Acrylic_(F)_-_12_oz._Bottle
Rustoleum has a flat black and a medium gray automobile engine primer that is heat resistant to 500 degrees. It goes on thin and smooth and, best of all, if you’re painting a steam engine, it can be used for your smokebox and firebox sides when you add the finish coat to the rest of the loco. One caution. Like any rattle can paint it goes on fast so you have to use care not to get runs. Let it cure for a few days before you paint over it.
Wow, thanks for the info on MicroMark paint. I paint all my HO roads Grimy Black and was hoping a new paint maker would bring back the classic color.
I think Rustoleum BBQ black is pretty close.
Jim Bernier (above) correctly observes that genuine Floquil Grimy Black has/had a greenish cast to it that the various suggested blacks and grays lack.
Indeed that slight greenish cast is why many Pennsy modelers maintained that Grimy Black was actually the closest equivalent to what the PRR called “Brunswick Green.”
Anyway, if a rattlecan paint is an acceptable substitute for your purpose, Krylon makes some camouflage colors one of which, a dark olive, is almost a dead ringer for Floquil’s late lamented grimy black.

Dave Nelson,
Tamiya, Black Green XF-27 is even closer to the Brunswick Green and perfect for NP F-unit pass. colors.
