Gripper Pad - is this a sound control option?

I was fooling around this afternoon looking for sound control options not involving Camper (Topper) tape. I am still reluctant to take the plunge on the camper tape because of the nasty and uncontrollable adhesive side.

In particular, I was looking for a subroadbed pad that would align a yard track height with the through track. I tried home depot rug to floor gripper pad and Voila! It had very similar characteristics the roll of 2" camper tape I ordered on Amazon a few days ago when informally tested under both homasote and cork.

Advantages: 1) Cheap. 2) Can be fixed in place with latex caulk, which leaves some working time to align things properly. This is one of my fears with camper tape, which seems to be a one and done proposition.

Disadvantages. Primarily that one must cut it to size with a hobby knife. No big deal on straights, but a nuisance on curves. However, the pad does seem to be a yard solution.

I’m wondering if anyone has tried this stuff in a working RR?

Not too long ago there was a post or article on using an underlayment for carpeting as roadbed. If I remember correctly there were instructions on how the person made a cutter for the material to make cutting it to an even width and to cut an angle on the edge. It may have been a “you tube” attachment to another post on here.

I usually make such a post a “favorite” or if it was a magazine article, I keep a notebook. Just went throught the notebook and went to Search our Community and up to Index of Magazines, NO LUCK. If you have a You Tube account you could search there.

I think you are on the right track (pun intended). Maybe my posting this will jog someone elses mind better than it did mine. I’ll keep thinking about it.

Good luck,

Richard
