Ground cover

Some years ago there was an article on grinding foam to make ground cover. I think it was in Model Craftsman magazine. I have most of all the issues of MCR and MR, but cannot find the article. Any help would be appreciated.
My E-Mail address is sego65lilly@msn.com Thanks.

Here is how I made ground foam.Bought a packet of forest green clothing die, mixed it in a bucket with two gallons of water.Tore up an old foam pillow into five inch by five inch pieces and soaked them in the die solution.Wrung out excess solution and hung on clothesline to dry. After pieces are dry I tore them up to a smaller size to fit into blender, maybe one inch by one inch.I forgot what got the best results as a grinder,I used blender and/or a coffee grinder for grinding. Here’s a link. I have tried this with cheapo sponges, not the upholstery foam recommended. It still worked ok.

I use an old $1 yard sale Oster blender. Use foam from old pillows or cusions and green acrylic paint. Put foam in blender with a big squirt of paint. I then turn it on full speed and add water until it starts blending. Judge color and add more paint as needed. Add more water if needed to keep it blending ( but use least amount of water possible). The longer the thing runs the finer the foam gets. Course foam takes 3 or 4 min. Fine can take 15 min. Then dump it in a cardboard box and spread it out thin. Allow to dry (sometimes 1 week). Tad da, ground foam. Use different colors to make different foams. Just do it in the garage or when the wife is gone because making ground foam anywhere seems to make women angry. I once got a part in packed with light green foam. That worked great as I didn’t need no paint. So kkep your eyes peeled for foam. And to the modelers who don’t know that all foams are not the same, we are using the spongy kind like in a pillow or chair cushion. Not styrafoam or pink extruded foam. Also avoid dark color foams such as black, can’t be made green with no amount of paint, done tried it, can’t be done! FRED
