Ground Throws for my yard

Thinking about useing ground throws for my switch yard. Any comments or input will help

I am using Caboose Industries ground throws in the yard in my n scale layout…I like them and they work well…Jerry

I just switched to Caboose ground throws for my HO layout and so far have been really pleased with them. I previously had a mixture of home-built and tortoise machines. By the way, make sure you get the sprung version of the ground throws - when installed properly they insure good contact of point and stock rails.

The Caboose ground throws work very well… only problem is they are grossly oversized. I used to use them but because they look like they weigh about 16 scale tons and none of the lttle floks on the layouy could pick up yhat much nor could reach up high enough tp throw them…[:-^]

I replaced all of them with Tortoise Machines and Details West stands. Went from this:

to this:

Granted there has been a lot of other work done in the location, but you can see the difference…

If you don’t mind or care about the look of the throws, the Caboose ground throws are very dependable, and reasonably easy to install. I used to use the non sprung ones and made my own springs out of piano wire. The sprung ones are better and easier to install in most places.

There’s also a “middle ground”. I saw a layout where the builder used the Caboose ground throws, but put them at the edge of the layout. Thus they didn’t show on the layout proper.

I use them on my test track layout (no scenery) and am very happy with them. I wouldn’t use them on the “real” layout, though–too clunky. Some folks have used the N scale ones on HO. That might work. Maybe someone here has experience doing just that.
