Thought that there might be folks out there that would be interested - I’ve converted most of the turnouts on my layout to manual ground throws, operating the turnouts remotely. I wrote up a “how-I did-it” and posted it on my site. Click on the link in the signature below, and on “Ground Throws for the FHN” in the left-hand frame. Pictures and all… Enjoy. [:)]
Edit: Comments, particularly positive ones, and questions are welcome… [:)] And the ground throws are NOT Caboose Ind. !!!
Don’t know what comments you are seeking for sure, but nothing wrong with your decision. My layout has around 250 switches, and only 25 - 30 are thrown with machines. Reason being the major part of the three decks is the ATSF Enid District in Oklahoma, which was a branch line connecting Guthrie with Kiowa KS and was a dark railroad with no powered switches. The Enid district runs on two of the three decks of my layout, and is the longest stretch of main on the railroad. I did use Peco switches for most of the district, Shinohara on the top deck mainline with Tortise.
Operating sessions seem to draw more wanting to run on the Enid District than the Oklahoma City main.
Well, I was just looking for anything - good idea, bad idea, why didn’t you use Tortises, etc… I do have a question for you, Bob: Did you use ground throws, or just move the Peco points with the ol’ giant “fickle finger of fate” :-)? (Not that there’s anything wrong particularly with the latter - just curious…)
