Groundbreaking set for Colorado commuter rail line

With the freight congestion on the Joint Line, and no relief in sight from the stalled Front Range Bypass, I don’t think we will see any commuter service south of Denver besides the light rail anytime in the near future.

According to the RTD Web site, the groundbreaking is to be Thursday March 20th.

Humm jointline, all the way to pueblo from denver

Are there any provisions from the Union Station to expand rail south of Denver?

When living there from 1976-1990 and from visiting at various times since then, I have not seen that much congestion once trains clear Denver. In Denver it is often possible to see a coal train awaiting a new crew. This causes congestion.
The biggest problem to using the existing joint line as a commuter line is the fact that the current lines are directionally run, and in places like Castle Rock the two lines are not close to each other. Therefore a logistics nightmare arises for either commuters or dispatchers.
I believe that RTD needs to get additional monies before the extension to 168th can be built. From a commuting standpoint, I also believe it will be needed if construction were to begin today. At least, RTD is starting to build the line. They threatened to jetison the project a couple of years ago when monies became scarce.

They’re building this in phases for reasons more important than ridership making economic sense. RTD doesn’t have the cash to build it on the schedule they originally promised to the voters.

The described line was once the Dent Sub-division, Colorado Division (1909-1948), Third Subdivision, Wyoming Division (ETT No. 1: Sunday, February 29, 1948) during Geo. F. Ashby’s Presidency (1946-1948), Dent Branch, Wyoming Division (1948-1993). Several fan trips with the then 8444 were operated on the ‘Dent’ during the 1980s. The line was severed just north of St Vrains in 1993, and later partly upgraded (8’s and Gates Northglenn-Quimby) by the RTD. Only 1.0 mile still exists from Sand Creek Junc, (the tower site was under the I-270 overpass until early 1953) to Behind my uncle’s 1940s residence just shy of the once bridged irrigation canal, where I was terminally bitten by the train bug. I’m gettin’ old!
