I’ve been pretty fascinated by this article from the November 2009 issue and was wondering, has anyone here actually modified/built/rebuilt an old engine into a new style? I’m really tempted to play around with the idea using old random parts. May as well use them for something. I’m not sure if I’m good enough to do what was shown but that’s never stopped me before. Just curious if others have tried.
I made several engines using parts and cutting them up. I made a tank engine out of a Lionel engine and a Camel back out of a Marx engine. I also modify cars and combine different parts to make unique cars.
I’ve got some neat random parts that I may try to bring together. I have a repro set of semi scale wheels for an old 763E Hudson and 2 rail 2 wheel leading and trailing brass truck assemblies. I have enough random valve train pieces to complete an engine and an engine body from an 80’s Lionel set that is blue and has elephant ears. I for got the number of the engine but all I ever had was the body. It’s actually the same body he modifies in the article except mine also has elephant ears. I think I’m going to give it a shot and see what I come up with. I don’t have a tender but cheap ones are easy to find. If i ever finish the thing, assuming I don’t mess it all up too bad, I’ll post my results.
