GTW Bicentenial GP38 in Detroit.

The National Model Railroad Association is being held in Detoit’s Ren Cen. It was under construction back in 1976 when I took the photo.

That is an interesting picture.

Apparently this is what became of 1776-

That must have been an original GTW GP38.

Later Grand Trunk Western obtained GP38-2 units from Missouri Pacific and the defunct Rock Island.

It is hard to believe that the original GTW GP38s would be removed from operation but they still have the GTW GP9Rs in service.

Its all based on the lease agreements, usally lasting for a period of 15 years. the GP9R’s were purchased outright, while the GP38’s were leased through a financial institution

Grand Trunk Western in Color by Morning Sun Books had a caption about the date the Bicentennial scheme was painted over. It was sometime in 1978.

That engine is hanging around the L.A. area a lot.I have seen it several times on UP locals.Because of the color scheme,I thought it was an ex UP loco.I never dreamed it was a Bicentennial at one time.

On the flip side there were Union Pacific SD40-2 Locos leased to GT with the Union Pacific Name replaced with the GT Logo in Red. It was a distinct period in the early 1990’s.
