Just finished reading Andy Sperandeo’s new Kalmbach book, ‘Model Railroader’s Guide to Freight Yards.’ It’s up to the usually high standard expected of all of Kalmbach’s books and is of great assistance if you’re contemplating building and operating a yard. (Which I am, which is why I bought it.) So, highly reccommended. However, having read the run up to release article in the December MRR, ‘10 tips for freight yard operation’, I was really surprised to find that the excellent diagram ‘classifying cars on arrival’ was not included in the book. This 3 step diagram explained classification better than a whole load of words. I photo-copied the article page and put it in the book for reference. Shame it was missed out in the book. (Oh yeah, and on page 35 the captions are the wrong way round … but that’s being SO pedantic.) Good book though, Andy, it’ll help me a lot.

I agree. I bought it earlier in the week and think it’s excellent. I’ve learned a lot from it already.
Have Fun,

I’ve been planning to buy this book, so it is good to hear that it is worth while.

I was able to read it a couple of days ago. It is an excellent book! If you have this one and the guide to locomotive servicing terminals, you are all set to start designing your yards.
IMHO the best guide is to observe the prototype and the way they layout their yards.Such information can not be gleam from a book.Books are good for limit knowledge base on the Authors knowledge still first hand observation is called for.[:D]
