Gulf Coast Lines

I note that on route maps of the Southern Pacific and Missouri Pacific both railroads have lines extending essentially from Houston to Brownsville. I know that there were two sets of tracks along part of the route, but do not know if each railroad owned separate tracks for the entire line or had trackage rights. Can anyone clear this up for me?

Thanks,
*** Watkins

The MoPac route is still in regular use. However. the SP route is out of service - with most of the rails removed from Wharton to Victoria. KSC acquired the rights to use this right of way during the UP-SP merger but it’s going to take more than a few million $ to return it to service.

Thanks for the information on the lines along the Gulf coast. I will have to get a reprint of a 1950’s vintage Official Guide. I have a coworker who spent many years with SP in Texas and even he did not know the answer to my question. I did hear that KCS is planning to rehab the line to Victoria as part of their NAFTA line. Time will tell.

Cheers,

Lots of Official Guides for sale on EBAY. Or there are reprints in Trains. Personally, I dont think you can beat the original.
