Gunn/Amtrak articles in Philadelphia Inquirer

There’s a couple interesting articles in the Philadelphia Inquirer today.
Gunn: White House Nearly Killed Amtrak
Where Gunn steps off the train
I didn’t realize just how close Amtrak came to going bankrupt last year. I guess after hearing the same thing for so many years, you just kind of assume it will always manage to limp along.

…I can’t say what I’d really like to but I’ll just comment…If it wasn’t for Mr. Gunn we’d now have no public National Rail Passenger system in place.

Next page…Wonder just what will be happening next…?

Another installment today.
New route for Amtrak seems likely

…A lot of different suggestions of what and how to do with Amtrak. It will be interesting to watch and see what this all might bring. For sure Amtrak cannot continue to limp along under the funding mechanism it’s had for the last 35 plus years, etc…Hopefully it can be brought into the 21th century of operation and really contribute to our transportation requirements.

Hopefully the rail reform bill will pass this year. Different approaches MUST be implemented, and with the right mix of private and public funds, rail competition will help Amtrak to become a better railroad.

Interesting. Shows just how a “wrench thrower” can mess things up and transfer blame elsewhere – especially, upon those who are doing great things to “save” the operation.

Saw this happen on Penn-Central, MILW, CRIP, SP among others.
