Though a battle, looks like things are looking much better for Amtrak as more support than ever is being voiced to senators from citizens. Inspite of schedule delays, Amtrak continues to increase in overall ridership after a short slump.
A lot of this is due to the hard efforts of NARP
(National Association of Railroad Passengers)
Ironically, the transportation secretary, Norm Mineta (a democrat!) is not too thrilled about this as his plans call for wiping out Amtrak’s subsidies. He continues to compare Amtrak to the Alaska Railroad ability to run passenger trains with no subsidies, which is an unrealistic and unfair comparison. [V]
Some of you may chew me out since this is not a model topic, but I also do this for the benefit of the Newbies as some have asked questions about Amtrak’s plight. Knowledge is power.
Don’t forget to contact your congressman and senator!
Lets remember when asked his opinion of a newspaper article our president said he doesn’t read them. If he can’t bother with the newspapers I can’t imagine a senator bothering with our stuff unless it is thrust upon them. Basically politicians don’t do anything unless enough people are screaming for it.
assuming anything i see on TV includng ‘West Wing’ has any basis in actual fact…
a) the president has no time to read newspapers
b) the president a daily briefing on any info that he needs in far more detail than any newspaper would print
also i think the george bush quote is a bit of misinformation , what he really meant was that he can’t read . newspaers or anything else
