Hal Carstens has passed away

Dear MR readers,

Harold H. “Hal” Carstens, president of Carstens Publications, Inc. (which publishes Railroad Model Craftsman and also Railfan and Railroad ) passed away yesterday following a short illness. More information is at http://www.trains.com/mrr/default.aspx?c=a&id=3302. All of us at MR and Kalmbach publishing send our condolences to the Carstens family at this difficult time.

Thanks,

Terry

I never met or even spoke with Hal, but I’ve had some dealings with Carstens Publishing, and Hal was clearly a good man who has had a great influence on the hobby. He will be missed!

Tom

He will be missed. I always enjoyed his Notes on an Old Timetable column. My condolences to his family.

Paul

The Carstens magazines have given me countless hours of enjoyment. A wonderful legacy, thank you Hal.

Rest in Peace

Thanks for letting us know Terry. I am saddened at this news and wish his family all the best.

That’s too bad. RMC and MR are the only 2 magazines I buy. I probably have more books from Carstons than Kalmbach. He was a great asset to this hobby and will be missed. He was an inspiration to me to be a better modeler and a real pleasure to to business with.

Pete

I spoke with Hal over the phone once about a cover on one of the RMC issues. He told me that every time he published a magazine with a picture of an ATSF engine with a War Bonnet paint scheme on it, they sold twice the volume than usual. A really nice, friendly guy.
