hand rails and grab irons how do you make them stronger?

Hello my dad read in magazine not sure witch one but . Someone found some spray at the auto parts store and used it on plastic hand rails and grab irons. And it made them stiffer or stronger? Does anyone know what it might be ? Or where I can find the article? Thanks frank

IIRC that artical had to do with making the paint on the handrails more resiliant to flaking off…more flexable.

David

Hello What is IIRC ? Is that the brand name ? Is for electric parts on cars? I think thats what he said it was for? Thanks Frank

IIRC = ‘If I recall/remember correctly’ is my guess

Jon

yep.

0-6-0, If you’re referring to the 2-26 electrical contact cleaner, that stuff helps clean off the brushes/commutator of open frame motors. It IS NOT for the handrails. Simplest way of making them “stronger” that I know of is by replacing the plastic with brass wire of the same diameter.

I think ModelFlex paint is the more elastic/flexible paint that others have had success with not flaking off handrails.

Ok I understand now. Yes that is the one he is asking about. Its mabey a year or so old? I have been looking in my old mags for it but cant find it not sure if its in mrr or mrrc ? Thanks Frank

which one what?

The paint?

Other than replacing plastic with metal, there is no way to may them “stronger”.

The product that can can help the paint stick is: Napa Polypropylene Clear Primer # 7223. It’s a primer for flexible auto parts. (available from NAPA auto parts stores - you may have to have them order it).

If the Delrin or acetal handrails, sideframes or other parts are not attached to the model, you can spray them directly from the can. If not, spray some of the primer into a container and brush it on with a paint brush. The trick is to completely encapsulate the part. Clean the brush with laquer thinner and don’t get the primer on styrene - it will craze it. Drying time is about 5 to 10 minutes.

It works best with acrylic paints like Polyscale & Modelflex. Once the primer is dry apply paint as you normally would.

I have also mixed it with Floquil paints with good results (70/30 paint/primer mix). It should also work with Scalecoat I, but I haven’t tried that.

A Weaver Models tech/rep demonstrated the effectiveness of using the primer by tying an RS-3 handrail in a knot and the paint didn’t crack or chip!

0-6-0-It’s called plastic adhesion paint. It’s made by Duplicolor and sold at auto parts stores. It’s a clear plastic primer that helps paint stick better. Read the instructions. Your NOT supposed to let it dry completely before painting over it. It works pretty good.

Hello that was the article I was talking about and that must be the paint. I did not read the article my dad did and could not remember it to well he thought it help them from braking off. He has a lot of stuff in draws and when he gets something out a grab iron or hand rail is Brook . He has made some from brass wire but that’s a lot of work for him. His hands don’t work to well any more. Big fingers little trains. Thanks for the help Frank

I saw that article your talking about. It was just about getting paint to stick better. Unfortunatly, the after market brass route is the only thing I know of to make them stronger.
