Happy Saint Patrick's Day All!

Just to break yez all out o’ the bloody coronavirus doldrums, here’s the “Four Kings of Ireland,” the Clancy brothers with Tommy Makem at the height of their powers with a rousing song, one that always get me fired up!

Here yez go…

Not being Irish, I never understood why the Irish make such a big deal to honor an Englishman.

Corned beef is in the slow cooker! Part Irish.

No-no, paisan, Saint-a Patrick was-a da ROMAN!

Just a little ethnic pride from the other side of me kickin’ in, hence the “Imperial Purple.” OK, Patrick was a Roman Briton, but why split hairs?

He, a Roman Briton, was kidnapped by Irish pirates when he wasa boy, and enslaved. Afer escaping, he went to Rome, where he became a Christian. As a grown man, he returned to Ireland, and brought Christianity there.

And don’t forget the legend that he banished all snakes from Ireland. Although I wonder how the Irish railroads could switch cars without snakes. [swg]

While not Irish, I do like corned beef and I like cabbage. But I must confess St. Patrick’s Day has not been one of celebration for me due to the events of March 17, 1975.

Simple. Neither NBRU nor Unite have a prominent S in their logo…

What happened in 1975?

But if you are referring to something personal, then, obviously, it’s none of our business.

By the way, I am reading a book called Hogger, and there is reference to a trainman/conductor named Stuart “Red” Hergert, who worked on the Milwaukee Road in Iowa, I believe in the 40s and 50s. Any relation? I’ve just begun the book, but it seems quite good, written by a Richard Peterson. I’ll write a review later.

I think he meant the Hillcrest bombing but got the date off by a year.
