Harbor front walls

I am building a harbor scene as part of my layout and would like some ideas on wall construction…I’ve considered just doing plain concrete, wooden pilings…I’ve tried to steamline the wooden piling process by using corrugated carboard…It doesn’t look that bad…Any ideas out there from anyone who has modelled seaports or harbors???

Depends on , what or how hard you want to build them. I made a jig out of wood and match sticks , to make a steel piling wall. After the jig was built , I then used plaster of paris to fill the mold. Then only after the plaster had hardend…about 8 hours, I removed the piece from the mold. Clened it up and spray painted it with off the shelf Krylon iron colored primer.

Didn’t turn out to bad and it saved me from buying the MR plaster piling wall sections at $4.00 a pop.

If you would like , I’ll see if I can’t find the photos of the process and post them on this forum.

I made my Harbor Walls from plaster castings using liquid latex and a section of a “Chooch” retaining wall. I measured my master for the correct height, then duplicated the rest until the wall was complete. To hide the edges of each wall, I made pilings of different lengths out of 1/4 dowels.

Here is a pic showing how it came out:

And how’d you do the barnicles?

Here is five photos to help you along , I’ll have to measure the mold its self ,should you need to build this jig.

Thanks guys …Really appreciate the replys …Will let you know what I do…Michael

The barnicles are made using “n” scale ballast. To get the water line, Dump your ballast in a deep dish or pan. Then Dunk your pilings in a mix of water and glue to the a height you desire, wetting the pilings with the glue/water mix. Then dunk each in the pan. The glue will pick up the ballast to that height, hence you got a water line established!

Great! Now I’ve got to get some Z scale ballast because I’m in N!
