I used the old Bachman body with Athearn frame/drive
Bachmann produced this very same locomotive up until a few years ago. With a little searching you can still find them. The body was decent but the drive sucked. You can always place the body upon an Athearn or other MFG’s drive.

BQ23-7…is that the cab forward thing?
My kid has one of those that we put on a P2K or Spectrum ( I don’t remember which ) drive. It’s a Chessie, and he likes the paint scheme.

what kind of drives will the shell fir, also what details were on the protoype?
hello doe anybody know what kind of drive will fit under the bachman shell??? what changes need to be made???
Ah-ha! Something that is finally my expertise. An Atlas U23B chassis will work, with slight modifications. I own 10(or 11…I forget[:P])BQ23-7’s, all Bachmann(Opposed to brass), but I hope to get a brass one day. I will go into greater detail on how to modufy the Atlas chassis to fit a little later, when I find what I wrote about it. Eventually, one of my BQ’s will darken the doorways of eBay.

By the way, BQ23-7’s were only used by The Family Lines. Chessie on a BQ23-7 is cheesie! Sorry, just my horrible attempt at humor. I am also going to try to kitba***he Bachmann BQ cab with an Atlas B23-7 shell. That way, I’d have the detail, and the chassis/motor to boot!

hey upscsx i would buy one from you i really want one, it is in my top 5 favorite locos to some it is pure ugly, but to me it is so beautiful haha.
Thanks
I still got the high bid on your hopper, hard to think nobody else would bid on it, you did a really awesoem job
Yeah, I know. It’s totally un-prototypical, but The Kid likes his Chessies! [;)] We got the BQ23 from the used pile at a local train store, I think, or maybe a train show. He liked it, so I bought it. It ran ok, but I wanted a better mechanism.
I’ll dig it out, and try to remember what I did to it. It’s been about 10 years or so ago I did it. I don’t quite remember exactly what I did, but it wasn’t too labor intensive. I did think about a cab chop job, but decided I didn’t want to paint it, so I wasn’t going to chop it.
As an aside, The Kid is about to turn 14, and he has gotten very particular about his equipment. He’s in the process of rebuilding his N scale layout, and he’s parked most of his N scale Bachmann and Lifelike stuff in a couple of cigar boxes, and insists he’s buying nothing but Atlas, MicroTrains, Kato, etc for either his N or our HO layouts. [^] The Kid’s only problem is he has champagne tastes, and a beer budget! [;)][:)][8D][swg][swg]

Rotorranch,
I was not referring to you guys at all! [:)] I was referring to another cheap Bachmann mistake, although you gotta give them somethin’ for actually making the BQ!

Wasn’t offended uspscsx…no prob! [:D]
In fact, I did get a big grin at your cheesy attempt at humour! [;)][:)][:D]

BTW uspscsx,I meant to add in my first reply, that I’m really looking forward to seeing your BQ23’s, and how you did em! I’m sure there is some things I can do different, and might try that on another body, if I ever find another one! This is the only one I’ve ever seen!
When my camera and The Kid’s train both occupy the same place in the space-time continuum, I’ll post some pics of his!

The problem is finding the U23B chassis. I’ll probably tear into the first “Kitbashing the BQ cab with an Atlas B23-7” in about a month. As soon as I have any progress or updates, I will be happy to share them with you., and anyone else who wants to see. After the U18B kitbashing, though, the BQ kitbash should be easier.
uspscsx
I own about 10, and am looking for more![:P][:D] Hopefully, I’ll end up with about 20 or so before they become impossible to find. I think there’s one on eBay, though I’m not sure. If there is, I’m all over it![:)]

I went the other way. I took a couple of BQ’s and made straight B23-7’s out of them. This was way before anybody had produced a B23-7. I used the cab and nose from an Athearn U-boat along with the chassis. Of the two there is only one still alive, the other took a 4 foot dive to a concrete floor!!

I suppose you don’t have the cabs now.
06, my first suggestion would be to find a BQ. May I ask, what would you use them for?

switching my own railroad Archer Grain!!!
Ah-ha. Do you plan to patch a Family Lines or paint it in Archer Grain’s colors?
Man, Archer Grain is going to be one heck of a large railroad! Stock-wise, that is.
