While in Clinton Iowa last trip I got to talking with a Proviso Conductor, And he was saying that it was his understanding that Globial 4 will open in August of this year, And when that happens Canel Street will close and be scrapped and sold for development , Anyone know about this ? Larry
Global 4 will be located near BNSF’s lpchi in Elwood I think that UP will do to global 1 is what my rr did to Western Ave intermodal yard and that is storage for baretables.

I’ve heard those rumors as well, Larry, concerning Canal Street.
Rodney, Global 1 and Canal Street are not the same yard.
Having said that, it should be noted that Global 1 is used for intermodal containers (stack trains), and Canal Street is used for trailers. I don’t know how that affects things. I know that UP (and CNW, too, in the case of Global 1) have found advantages to having these yards in the city, both for local deliveries and shipments and for interchange to other carriers. I would think that both of these yards would fit into the scheme of things for these markets better than someplace out in the boonies beyond Joliet, but that’s just me. We’ll just have to stay tuned!
There is a concern today within the Dept of Homeland Security that freight cars handling HAZMAT loads in urban areas could become targets for terror acts. I work in the power industry and the same notices for caution as to potential threats come through our security department as blanket issues.
Moving the yards out of city drops the urban congestion surrounding the yard and the hiding hole spots someone could come into the yard from, minimizes the security distractions and opens vistas for security cameras. That said any damages from a terror act could be also minimized as to public contact.
From what I hear that is true , after Global 4 opens Canal Street will close and some of the operations from Global 1 will also move to Global 4 . From what I have read most of the Traffic for Global 4 will be traffic going and coming from the South and Mexico and this may be what the change will be for Global 1 , but that is purely speculation on my part .
As far as opening I have heard June of this year , but it may have gotten pushed back some .
I know alot of the work is nearly complete , the best I can tell the Road work for the trucks seems to be the biggest hold up .
My last visit to Canal St was about 3 yrs ago. At that time the UP guys were saying how they couldn’t wait to get out. Canal St currently handles the Stockton traffic. i.e. train Z CS LC (Canal Street - Latrhop CA). That was a single stack train in the past which worked fine for Canal St (trailers and single stacked containers (i.e. flat on deck on all purpose spines). With the Donner double stack clearance work done, that no longer makes sense. It would call for that train to be made up at G1 given that they can double stack there. Also, the entrance to Canal St was a mess for a 53’ unit to get up the grade and around that horseshoe bend in the driveway. If you look at a map of Chicago, that shows up on the NE corner of the intersection of Canal St and W. 26th St. Partially under the Dan Ryan Expy.
