Has anyone else noticed the you tube explosion of tutorials???

I really don’t like Youtube all that much for 2 reasons:

  1. almost everytime I try to use it, the website tries to launch a something or other file into my computer (Nortain antivirus saves the day)

2: the cursing, rude gestures, imaturity, and everything else stupid, dumb, illigal, etc…etc…

For an example of #2: I don’t read the comments because almost every responce dropps every possible bomb that should never even be allowed where children could see.

Another example is that 75-80 % of the videos can be classified as profannity by federal law ( I’m not real sure about the laws, but everything must meat some part of it’s criteria or it’s profanity) Now, I know that teen-agers want to have fun and most (not all) would like to have that fun be illigal in some way or extent ( I don’t know if it exists, but you could search on Youtube for “how to paint graffitti” and, if you don’t specify “model train” or “on a model train,” you could find plenty of people in some back alley somewhere doing exactly that, teaching how to paint graffitti on some wall.

Don’t get me wrong, some Youtube people don’t use explitives in their videos and have very good how-to videos for their respected hobbies, like this one teen-ager who calls himself Ohiosouthern, and try to make a fairly good effort into teaching you how to make that neat weathering effect on a locomotive without an airbrush (Thanks Ohiosouthern) or how to model a junkyard scene complete with wrecked cars ( I can’t remember who made those videos.)

But I will say that the problem with the profanity (you all know what I’m talking about) as well as what is accually in the video (The horror) is a major problem for me, and it’s rapidly spinning out of control. One thing I can say, Youtube is not the place for me (you can tell thats bad, I’m only 15 myself.) The majority of the material is better off in some R-rated movie.

I think, that if Youtube want’s t

Sure, I’ve watched a few - why would I deny myself knowledge? But thus far I’ve only found one or two useful. I did find one hilarious where the guy dropped his loco onto his foot (loco okay, foot not so much). One reason there are so many lately (and in just about every other field as well) is that there is a company that pays people to make these! They figure out what people are asking for on google (like “how do i boil water?”) and then freelancers write a quickie article or shoot a short video and get paid a few cents, maybe a dollar. Some of the freelancers do many a day. I could not figure out how to remove the filter door on my vacuum cleaner and one of these little vids saved me from breaking it.

  1. Youtube isn’t installing anything harmful, probably cookie or a pop up, at any rate, your “Nortain” is evaluating the site, my “Norton” does the same for me, it doesn’t mean that something harmful is happening.

  2. Welcome to the web. Just because their is stupid and foolish videos on Youtube (I agree with you)doesn’t mean there isn’t good content, you learn quickly what is junk and what is useful, that doesn’t mean I going to ignore the whole site. The historical railroad videos on the Great Northern for example is awesome.

  3. Do I watch the tutorials? No, I haven’t really seen anything new that I haven’t already done. Ballasting track is ballasting track, rock molds are rock molds, but it is great IMO for noobs.

Geared: Are you sure? I have been modeling in HO Gauge since 1953 and despite the fact that I have settled on some basic best practices, it seems that every new project that I start presents challenges that are new to me. Peter Smith, Memphis

I agree it’s great for Noobs but some things change and there’s always room for learning. For instance did you know they have drills that you don’t have to turn by hand now. [:D]

Some are great. This last weekend I spent over an hour watching video’s from the 30’s through 70’s of old trains and loco’s. Great stuff.

I guess I am going to head over to YouTube and look up some of these videos - if there is some information out there I might actually learn something. It’s true that comments following some of the videos are written by insufferable bores who think profanity impresses people which is why I never read any of them.

What? What is this drill you speak of? Stop pulling my leg ! [:D]

Peter, I should have worded that better, what I should has said was that there are upteen hundreds* of videos all showing pretty much the same thing, now airbrush weathering tutorials I can use. So yea I *exaggerated (as usual)

Youtube is great for stuff like this;

The black rapper known as “Monster Railroad” has video’s on you tube that are somewhat funny. I mean, who ever heard of a rapper model railroader?
