Tony Koester did an article on weathering a Steam loco in 7 minutes
using Pan Pastels a while back
This appeals to me since i have a permenate trache and can’t use an air brush
Has any one tried this Method ?
Thanks Terry

Doesn’t it seem to be a bit expensive?
I’ve used it on 5 diesel locomotives and a bunch of rolling stock. I’ve been happy with the results/low time requirement. If you’re really good with an airbrush and have time, I’m sure you can be more detailed.
I paid 38$ for the kit that had 7 colors and several sponge applicators
I suppose you could buy a box of colored chalk cheaper but then you’d have
to grind it up
Kinda Messy and wastefull
38$ is way cheaper than an air brush
But more importantly for me since i have a hole in my neck and no filter
its easier to use
Where did you get your $38 kit, please?
I’ve seen some pictures emailed to me by friends, of car weathering done with this technique and they looked great. They were really pleased with the technique. Definitely planning on buying some soon and trying it myself.
I’ve been doing the same for years, but w/ Braegdon’s weathering powders, if I don’t weather w/ dry brushing and thinned airbrushing. Weathering powders have an adhesive quality to them and shouldn’t be confused w/ chalks. They can be worked into a flat finish and really don’t require an added protective dull coat.
