Has anyone used Sugru (moldable self-setting rubber)?

While looking for some substance to heat-insulate metal handle on some cookware (yeah, I know not exactly Model Railroading) I came across Sugru - website here.
OK, reviews and stories are all great about Sugru on that site, but I don’t trust what seems like a Web-Infomerical.

Since the model railroading community usually knowledgable concerning new materials like this, can anyone state if this “Sugru” is good or not.

Thanks

Well, I’m taking my one thread bump, as I am somewhat interested in what this could do.

There are DIY Sugru receipes on the web: How To Make Your Own Sugru Substitute - the only catch being that they didn’t mention the temperature-handling capabilities of their home-grown Sugru (or I didn’t find it yet in the comments). The basic ingrediants in the home-grown are Silicon Caulk and Cornstarch, with various substitutions and additions here and there. The only catch I see is some mention of skin irritation, even after the substance cures (that’s no good). I could make up a batch myself (and probably will), but that won’t really help with testing long term durability.

So has anyone used real Sugru? Made their own? Durability, heat resistatnce, and no skin irritation is important, and surely we could use something like Sugru in the modeling world?

Don’t see any mention of package size or price. Could have interesting possibilities, especially if it is not a skin irritant. Some folks are more sensitive to such things, so would have to try it someplace it wouldn’t HAVE to be handled for a personal test.

If you do buy or make some let us know how it came out and what you used it for or could be used for in modeling.

Have fun,

Richard

From their Order Page link “Buy Some Segru” at top of page or “See Packs & Prices” at bottom of page

Multi pack 8 pieces, total 40gram net $18.00 + shipping

3 x 5 gram Minipacks, total 15gram net $10.00 + shipping

3 x 20gram Minipacks, total 60gram net $20.00 + shippimg

1 x 100gram lump $20.00 + shipping

Based on the described properties, it would be best to buy the smaller packs, unless you intend to use a large quantity at one time since it starts curing when exposed to air… Also the shelf life in the package is only 6 months (18 months if refrigerated). So not a good idea to buy a large quanity unless you have an immediate use fot it.
