I did not expect that BNSF would consider additional EMD Motive Power until I saw an EMD SD70ACE demonstrator leading a BNSF train in Tulsa, Ok this morning. Is BNSF finally wising up and considering other options?
The company name is now BHP Billiton after a merger with an English company, and shares are now traded in the UK as well as Australia.
BHP Billiton took delivery of the first five of fourteen units on 22 October 2005, and are believed to have ordered another 16 units for 2006 delivery. This gives a total of 30 units, but more are expected to be ordered to replace older GE CM40-8M units and recently obtained rebuilt SD40 and SD40-2 units. A total of fifty is quite likely, but a single order for that number is not expected.
These units are SD70ACe/LC (for low clearance) being possibly seven inches lower (sadly, the driver’s manual gives the standard height in the details).
The BHPB AC6000 units are also low clearance units, to fit through the oldest car dumpers.
*BNSF previously agreed to acquire a total of 1,315 locomotives, in three separate agreements, by 2009. As of December 31, 2004, all 500 locomotives under the first agreement had been delivered, bringing the outstanding total commitments to 815. In addition, through December 31, 2004, 115 locomotives were delivered under these remaining agreements. During the first nine months of 2005, BNSF took delivery of an additional 218 locomotives.

After the agreements are fulfilled, just a thought, in the future, the EMD SD70ACe’s would look great in new BNSF colour scheme!
